Services
offered
- Help in analyzing
problems in web sites and paper documents, including
working with users to understand how and why they use
the documents.
- Help in reorganizing and
rewriting web sites and paper documents, working closely
with all members of project teams.
- Usability testing,
expert review, task analysis, and other aspects of
user-centered design to make certain that web sites and
documents work well for the people who come to them.
- Hands-on, very practical
training on many topics, including: writing for the web,
usability and user-centered design, and developing clear
and usable documents. Courses range from 1/2 day to 2
days. I always tailor the course to the client's focus
and need. I teach separate courses on clear rule
writing, writing clear letters and notices, and writing
usable and useful instructions.
Example
project
State
of Washington: I have been working with rule writers in
the State of Washington since 1994, helping them to see
the problems in traditional documents and helping them
to develop a process for rethinking, reorganizing, and
rewriting their regulations. My two-day course always
receives rave reviews; but more importantly, we now have
many examples of clear and usable state regulations. That
makes life easier for the agency people who have to interpret
the regulations as well as for the external users who
are affected by the regulations. My contract to give these
courses has just been renewed for another two years.

Siegel
& Gale is internationally recognized for its groundbreaking
work in the simplification of documents. Our mission is
to cut through complex communications, "humanize" them,
and enhance their usefulness. We blend four disciplines:
plain language writing, information design, marketing,
and technology -- specifically, knowledge of laser printing
and interactive media. We have worked on dozens of private
and public sector projects, including clear, cutomer-oriented
statements: simplified prospectuses; user-friendly correspondence;
and clear, rational literature systems. Our fundamental
business philosophy, Simple is Smart, has grown more compelling
as the world has grown more complex.

Techstyle
Group is a nationally certified, woman-owned business
that holds federal CCR Registration and vendor access
to the GSA.
We specialize in information discovery and clear content
development for business, technology, and government.
Plain language is our tool for developing and delivering
strategic material with impact. We design and produce
paper and electronic documents that permit your readers
to easily find what they need, understand what they find,
and act on that understanding.
Our motto: Write it well, so your reader will understand
it on first reading.
Example
project
FDA
Techstyle worked with the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) to improve a misunderstood drug warning on a popular
acne prescription drug.
The warning about an adverse reaction was too complex
for either patients or physicians to understand. Therefore
it was ignored and a severe adverse reaction was not recognized
or reported. As a result, many teens and young adults
developed an incurable, life-long, incurable disease called
inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD. IBD has caused multitudes
to undergo lifelong medication, repeated surgeries, and
loss of intestine or colon.
We took these steps using plain language:
- Submitted
clearly written, convincing reports to the FDA
- Published
a simple Letter to the Editor in The American Journal
of Gastroenterology (September 1999)
- Participated
in an interview on a nationally syndicated radio show
(see www.Troubleshooter.com).
- Presented
to a widely publicized medical symposium
We accomplished for patients, for physicians, and for
the FDA:
- New
plain language FDA warnings for both physicians and
patients, with the requirement that patients read
and sign the warning adverse reaction warning document
before being allowed to purchase this drug
- Prevalent
physician and patient recognition and reporting of
early IBD symptoms
- Immediate
medical intervention to stop or limit IBD as a side
effect of this drug
- A
new user-friendly section on the FDA
Web site advising of warnings on multitudes of
prescription drugs--in plain language
